Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 Review: Best Foldable Smartphone in 2020
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is the ultimate choice. It is the best foldable phone to buy in 2020. Someone has described it as a foldable pocket camera, whereas someone has described it as a foldable tablet. When folded it is a cutting-edge smartphone with 6.2 inches screen that can provide plenty of room to write, read, and watch any video content. Considering how useful this device is, it is quite expensive. It costs twice as much as Samsung Galaxy S20.
Design and Display
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 seems like the future vision of Samsung phones. You will have a phone and tablet in one with all in all an awestruck feeling. Redefining its screen folding innovation, Samsung has brought two design features. One is Hideaway Hinge, a smooth backbone that supports the inner display at any angle from 75-115 degrees. Unfolded, you can use it as a small laptop.
Samsung has also worked on its sweeper technology to repel dust particles. There is a necessary gap along the phone’s spine to ensure fold and unfold with small vacuum-like bristles lining the inside of the hinge. The Fold 2 is not a dust-proof. It is lighter than it seems with 282 grams whereas it is heavier than Galaxy S20 Ultra, which is 222 grams. When folded it is unsurprisingly 16.8mm thick and makes you feel like you are holding two phones stacking one upon another, still it is not a problem fitting in the pocket of your jeans or jacket. Unfolded it is typically like a flagship phone with a 6.9mm thickness.
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 comes with squared-off edges and matte colors, Mystic Black, and Mystic Bronze, but upon ordering from Samsung.com you have further options: Metallic Silver, Metallic Gold, Metallic Blue, and Metallic Red.
It has a spacious 7.6 inches new Ultra Thin Glass display designed to provide a better touchscreen feel and is durable but is very prone to smudges. There is a small cutout for a selfie camera. The main Dynamic AMOLED 2X display boasts a refresh rate of 120Hz, providing you a smoother scrolling and overall performance than the first Galaxy Fold with 60Hz refresh rate. The 6.2 inches cover display offers a 60Hz refresh rate, still a lot better than the first fold.
The fingerprint sensor is shifted from in-display to a side-mounted power button. It has a polished design in comparison to other dual-screen phones like LG V60, Microsoft Surface Duo and the Moto Razr 2020.
Camera
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is a step down from the Galaxy Note 20. It has three cameras in the back, including a 12MP wide-angle camera, a 12MP telephoto lens with 10X digital zoom and 2X optical zoom, and a 12MP ultra-wide-angle sensor with a 123-degree field of view.
The unique feature here is the Dual Preview, that allows you to see how the objects are going to look in the image through the cover display and you can take high quality selfies with the help of rear cameras. The device can be propped up with the help of laptop mode and help keep the subjects in focus using Auto Framing. The Flex Mode helps maintain live review on the top half and review of the recent pictures on the remaining bottom half. The close-up shots offer fantastic details and fine natural color tone. The Night Mode works well, but is not so comparable to iPhone 11 Pro Max.
The dual 10MP cameras one on the inside tablet display and the other on the Cover Display give sharp images. Both the rear and the front cameras can record 4K videos at 60 frames per second, 1080p at 60 and 240 frames per second and 720p at 960 frames per second.
Chipset
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is one of the fastest smartphones in 2020, thanks to Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line Snapdragon 865 Plus. It didn’t use Exynos 990 chipset after Qualcomm’s chip seemed fast in the testing.
It has 12GB laptop-grade RAM for flawless multitasking with more than three apps open and you can project a computer-like interface on the television with wireless Samsung Dex mode. But there is a bit of disappointment in the internal storage with the limited 256GB. When it comes to 5G connectivity, it varies by region. The combination of Samsung’s OneUI 2.5 and Android 10 works great. The company’s App Continuity feature helps you customize which applications to put on the screen.
Battery
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is powered by a non-removable 4500 mAh battery. On average, with continuous surfing at 150nits brightness and refresh rate of 60Hz, the phone lasted approx. 10 hours and 9 hours at 120Hz. In comparison to other flagship phones, it is a bit low but for its size, this level of endurance is pretty impressive. The battery helps you keep going the whole day even with heavy usage.
The device supports 25W fast charging technology as well as PowerShare reverse charging at 4.5W. There is also an 11W wireless charging option.
TechByte’s Final Verdict
At the end of the day, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is quite a catch if you want to impress your friend circle with the next big thing providing you the experience of a durable and smooth tablet-sized screen and a typical smartphone that can fit in your pocket. Moreover, this might be the right choice for those who like multitasking. Nevertheless, this device can’t be your go-to camera in the form of a smartphone as there are several flagship smartphones out there in the lower price range that can outperform its cameras.
